This Jewish history tour in Vienna is directed towards anyone who is either Jewish, who had Jewish relatives in Austria or who just happens to have an interest in Jewish life.
My heart goes out to anyone who lost a loved one in the Holocaust.
We will start our tour at the beginning of Jewish life in Vienna, in the Middle Ages. Why were Jews so indispensable for the city’s wealth?
We will visit the location of the old medival Jewish town, today there is the city’s latest Memorial to be seen.
Then we will visit the gory former Gestapo headquarters, another memorial, and we will get a glimpse of Leopoldstadt, the center of Jewish life in the 19th century.
We then continue by tram to Heldenplatz and deal with Adolf Hitler, the Anschluss and the horrors that followed afterwards.
Afterwards I want to show you a controversial memorial by Alfred Hrdlicka on Albertina square. Why controversial? You will learn this on the tour!
